The White Supremacy Rally In Boston Just Backfired In Epic Fashion

On the heels of last weekend’s abhorrent white supremacy rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, the nation watched wearily as event organizers in Boston touted another “free speech rally” today. Bostonians, however, had no plans of standing idly by while their city turned into a symbol of hate.

To counter the nearly 100 “free speech” demonstrators, approximately 15,000 counterprotestors took to the streets. The Boston Free Speech Coalition, which organized the rally, had initially planned to include notable white nationalists as speakers. It was only after the horrific acts of violence in Charlottesville last weekend that the organization began to distance itself from these speakers and the hate groups in attendance.

“While we maintain that every individual is entitled to their freedom of speech and defend that basic human right, we will not be offering our platform to racism or bigotry,” the group said in a Facebook post today. “We denounce the politics of supremacy and violence.”

That did not deter the tens of thousands of counterprotestors from showing up on Saturday. The Boston police, for their part, dispatched 500 police officers to keep the rally attendees apart from the counterprotestors.
