Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has proven to be a fickle fellow over the course of the past few months. While full-heartedly endorsing President Trump’s abhorrent domestic legislative agenda, his latent Russophobia and loyalty to the defense contracting industry have dictated that he take a hardline stance on the Trump-Russia investigation – and that could prove to be monumental in the looming showdown between the White House and Special Counsel Mueller.
A close Trump friend, Christopher Ruddy, has already announced that the President is considering firing former FBI Director Robert Mueller from his position as Special Counsel and ending his investigation into the Trump campaign team’s potentially treasonous collusion with agents of the Russian Federation.
To prevent that, Senator Graham just announced on the President’s favorite TV network that he’s going to be proposing a bill to prevent presidents from firing Special Counsels, and warned that if Trump fires Mueller, it could mean the “end of his presidency.”
On FOX News’ “America’s Newsroom,” Sen. Graham announced that:
Mr. Mueller’s the special counsel, appointed under the laws of the land, and the President cannot draw a red line as to what the special counsel might do, that’s inappropriate. If Mr. Mueller has a conflict, bring it to us, we’ll deal with it, but the idea that he would be dismissed while investigating the president and his team is unacceptable, so I’m going to create a statute that would say anytime a special counsel is impaneled to investigate the president or their team, a dismissal has to be reviewed by the courts”
That puts both the President and the pro-Trump members of the Senate in a rather uncomfortable position – do they dare open up a rift within their own party in their efforts to protect a president who so far has shown no support for their agenda but constantly berates them for failing to “protect” him?
A vote against a Republican-proposed statue to keep the President from firing Mueller is the best present a primary challenger could want.
It appears some real “line-in-the-sand” moments are coming for Trump and the Republican Party. One thing’s for certain – the American people deserve to know what Trump is trying to hide from Special Counsel Mueller.
