Republicans have a penchant for fetishizing violence. They’re a party of draft dodgers and sycophants who like to think of themselves as hypermasculine warriors. With that in mind, Rep. Blake Farenthold’s (R-TX) vile comments are in perfect fitting with the GOP brand.
Farenthold appeared on 1440 Keys, a Texas radio station, and lamented the failure of Senate Republicans to force through Trumpcare. The legislation stalled out when several Republican senators, prominently Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Shelley Moore-Capito (R-WV) refused to endorse the disastrous, murderous bill.
“Some of the people that are opposed to this, there are some female senators from the northeast. If it was a guy from south Texas I might ask him to step outside and settle this Aaron Burr-style,” Farenthold said. Aaron Burr was the senator and Vice President who infamously killed Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in a duel.
Farenthold’s threatening comments about his fellow members of Congress are grossly inappropriate. Trump has coarsened our political discourse so much that Republicans are now outright fantasizing about violence against each other.
Twitter had a field day with Farenthold’s ludicrous pronouncement:
I can't see Lisa Murkowski losing a duel with Blake Farenthold tbh, even if her weapon jammed

I'm pretty confident any of those women could beat Blake Farenthold in a duel, or a fist fight, or whatever. https://t.co/SIaZk2KUmQ

Blake Farenthold is the rare lawmaker who is precisely as dumb as he looks.

As it turns out, Farenthold’s comments are just the latest chapter in a long history of misogynist behavior.
Farenthold was previously sued for sexual harassment. The “family values” Republican was running a website called www.blow-me.org at the time. His former communications director said that Farenthold confessed to having “sexual fantasies” and “wet dreams” about her. The fact that a man as disgusting and immoral as this continues to serve in Congress is an embarrassment.
