Frederick Nolan Sorrell was arrested last week for committing an anti-Muslim hate crime in Portland, Oregon and charged with second-degree intimidation after subjecting a Muslim couple to racist slurs and intimidating behavior.
Per The Oregon Committee of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Sorrell allegedly drove beside the couple for more than 20 blocks, “attempted to hit their vehicle several times and shouted, ‘take off the [expletive] burka, this is America, go back to your [expletive] country!’ before mimicking firing a handgun pointed at the couple.”
While he was quick to confront the innocent couple on the street, the racist 49-year-old struck a decidedly different tone at his arraignment, where he sobbed uncontrollably in front of reporters.
“I never tried to run into them,” Sorrell said through tears at the Multnomah County Court. “I was just going to work. I never tried to follow them. I never tried to make contact with them after the fact. I guess my fear and paranoia– I just yelled out. I don’t go on social media looking to hate on people. I guess my ignorance and my stupidity is why I opened my mouth, and I shouldn’t have and I claim full responsibility. I don’t know who you are. I’m sorry I blurted out what I blurted out, my paranoia my fear. I don’t hate you I don’t know you. I don’t wish death upon these people.”
Sorrell pleaded not guilty to his charges, and will have to appear in court again in August. In the meantime, he will not be allowed to access Facebook, on which he made multiple bigoted comments.
The attack comes on the heels of a prior incident that recently rocked Portland, in which two men were fatally stabbed defending two teenagers – one Muslim and the other black – from a racist tirade on a train. The attacker, Jeremy Joseph Christian, had previously been seen shouting “Die Muslims!” and giving the Nazi salute at a rally in Portland.

CAIR-Oregon spokesperson Zakir Khan said, “We hope the arrest of this suspect will serve to deter others from committing bias-motivated crimes targeting Muslims or any other minority group. CAIR-Oregon thanks the Portland Police Bureau and the Portland Mayor’s office for their diligent efforts in this case.”
While racists like Sorrell may feel emboldened by the apparent endorsement of the Trump administration, their deplorable behavior will land them not only in jail, but forever immortalized on the internet, sobbing repulsively for the world to see.
