Sometimes Republican policy is so actively bad as to seem intentionally villainous. A local ABC affiliate reports that a new tragedy can be laid at the feet of the GOP.
A child recently died at a childcare center run by Dan Sullivan, a Republican state representative from Arkansas who has repeatedly opposed legislation to increase protections and safety procedures inside childcare facilities. The same facility also saw an outbreak of shigella, a bacterial infection that spreads through groups of children.
Christopher Gardner Jr. – a five year old boy who was attending the facility for developmental assistance – died after being left in a hot van for an entire day. Ascent Children’s Services, the company which owns the special needs facility, fired four employees after the death.
“It didn’t take them but two minutes or one minute to go back and get off their lazy asses and go see where they kids at. They didn’t check for my grandbaby,” Carrie Smith, Gardner’s grandmother, said to ABC.
Representative Sullivan, who is the CEO of Ascent, said recently that childcare is vastly over-regulated. He also opposed a bill requiring 50% of childcare employees to be CPR qualified. Sullivan and his company have a vested interest in removing protections because it lowers the cost of operation. A more dangerous environment makes it easier to turn a profit.
Sullivan has personally apologized to Gardner’s family, NBC reports, but unless he ends his crusade against childcare protections immediately, it will prove to be a hollow apology indeed.
